ANDY WARHOL Pittsburgh, 1928 – New York, 1987
Warhol was the perfect illustrator of the years of the economic boom, the years of the triumph of the so-called welfare democracy, a world of which he had such a clear understanding that he could foresee developments. Time has confirmed the extraordinary foresight of Warhol’s prophecies, the man who told the future.
The artistic activity of Andy Warhol has many works, which he produced in series with the help of the screen printing system. His most famous paintings represent images that have become real icons: Marilyn Monroe, Liz Taylor, Mao Zedong or Tse-tung and other lesser-known faces.
He took images from the mass information circuits disclosed by the daily press, such as advertising reproductions of large commercial brands, Coca Cola bottles and Campbell’s jars, or striking images that made headlines, road accidents and electric chairs, managing to modify the original meanings, precisely with the repetition of the image itself on a large scale.
ANDY WARHOL Pittsburgh, 1928 – New York, 1987
Andy Warhol (born Andrew Warhola; August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987) was an American artist, director and producer who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, advertising, and celebrity culture that flourished by the 1960s, and span a variety of media, including painting, silkscreening, photography, film, and sculpture. Some of his best known works include the silkscreen paintings Campbell's Soup Cans (1962) and Marilyn Diptych (1962), the experimental film Chelsea Girls (1966), and the multimedia events known as the Exploding Plastic Inevitable (1966–67).
